OTSEGO COUNTY, Mich,. (WPBN/WGTU) - - A project to turn a historic downtown building in Gaylord into housing and commercial use space is getting a financial boost from the state.

The Revitalization and Placemaking Program through the Michigan Economic Development Corporation is committing $900,000 to the project.

The three-story 50-year-old Harold Elgas Clock Tower Building on Main Street will have eight apartments consisting of two bedrooms and one bathroom.

The main floor will also have retail space and the front of the building facing Main Street will have a covered porch and fireplace.

“Gaylord needs rejuvenation again downtown. A lot of people are working on a lot of good things downtown but this is a housing component that Gaylord needs, and you want people living in your downtown. They use the services and just make your downtown more vibrant. So for us to be able to do, and the state is helping us get market rate nice apartments and that’s great but we need more apartments other than these. We need workforce, we need affordable,” said Gary Scott, Go North Properties.

Scott says he also plans to restore the historic clock tower that's attached to the building. Go North Properties plans to begin construction in May and have the project completed by Spring of 2026.
